Chipmunks at 7th Heaven!

Today our Chipmunk playgroup group (2-3 year olds) met at 7th Heaven Alpacas and had a great time. Sally was great with the kids and introduced us to the animals and taught us a little about them. We saw a little baby only 3 days old and another mom who is ready to birth any day now. We also met several males and even little toddler alpacas (last years Cria).
Alpacas are a shy animal; they seemed interested in the kids, but startled at quick movements (which toddlers are known for!!)

The tots were eager to feed the animals some carrots, but the alpacas were a bit nervous... Thats when we met Oli.

Oli was in a pen all on his own with a tent; Sally told us that Oli is a rescue. Before arriving at 7th Heaven, he lived his life in a small pen and had never seen the outdoors. When he came to 7th Heaven he was afraid to be outside so Sally had a small tent constructed in his pen so that he could be inside and learn to enjoy the outdoors. He sure seemed happy today. He wasn't shy at all and eagerly took carrots from each of the kids.

Every time we passed near his pen or called his name he ran to see if we had more treats for him. He was an instant hit with the kids.

At 7th Heaven the Alpacas are sheared once a year; they had just been sheared last weekend so were a little bare when we saw them. Sally brought out a small bag of the hair for us to feel and showed us some mittens made with Alpaca fleece. The fleece from the Alpacas is warmer than wool and because it does not contain lanolin is hypo-allergenic.
