Keeping family traditions alive with Mother's Day recipes

A lot of memories stem from food!  As we grow up special family events and occasions likely are planned around food.  Family meals and making sure everyone is at the dinner table (or together for at least one meal of the day) is proven to be good for our children.

When planning meals we often find it important to incorporate the meals that we grew up eating at these family meals.  I wanted to share a couple of recipes from my mother in law that she made for the family when my husband was growing up.  Here are two she was happy to share.

Sweet and Sour Meatballs

Meatballs:
1 lb ground beef
½ cup rolled oats
1 slightly beaten egg
¼ cup milk
Combine above ingredients.  Let stand 15 mins. Shape into balls.  Brown in hot oil

Sauce:
1 cup water
½ cup ketchup
¼ cup brn. Sugar
¼ cup vinegar
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp. Corn starch

Mix above ingredients together and pour over meatballs in large fry pan.  Cook over low heat 20-30 mins. covered.   Stir occasionally.  May also be placed in covered casserole and baked 35-40 mins.  At 350 F.

Donnas Chocolate Chip Cookies
1 cup margarine or butter
½ cup white sugar
½ cup brown sugar
1 cup semi-sweet choc chips
1 ¼ cups rolled oats
1 ½ cups all purpose flour
1 tsp. B soda
1 egg slightly beaten
Cream  margarine and sugars together.  Add egg and mix well.  Add chocolate chips,  then oats.  Sift together flour and b soda and then add to creamed mixture.  Mix well and drop by heaping teaspoonfuls on greased baking sheets.  Bale for approx 10-12 mins.  at  350 F.  Enjoy.

Happy  Mother’s  Day to all Moms.  Enjoy the cookies.    I often made these when my boys were young.   In later years my oldest son David  use to tell me he traded these at school for oreo cookies.  Motherhood the hardest job we do  but,  the most rewarding , especially when they give you a hug and say they love  you,  whether they are 3 or 30.

  1. Celebrating mothers day with your family is the best one. Having foods and eat with the kids and the whole family.
